Wind Turbines - for and against.

For;

They are quiet and involve little or no disturbance to local residents.

Against;

They are very noisy. Even the most modern designs suffer from production of very low frequency noise. This is a mechanical effect of the blades disturbing large volumes of air and simply cannot be avoided.

The wind turbine at Nympsfield in Gloucestershire described by the developers as the quietest available emits sound at source of 99dB(A) measured by the German Wind Energy Institute ( DEWI ). The noise that it emits, a mixture of whooshing, whistling and humming, can clearly be heard 1000 yards away. One turbine manufacturer states that dwellings should be 2km away.

This report from a German university study details the many problems experienced over the long term by nearby residents.
